Tina Ashton – Biography
I was born in Caerphilly,South Walesin 1961 and from a very young age I attended a Welsh speaking school, despite English being our first language at home. School was a fun time in my life and amongst my memories of education I remember enjoying art and recall winning prizes in competitions for creating posters and designing a Christmas card. I also remember my disappointment when teachers & careers advisors discouraged me from taking Art & Technical Drawing in order to study more academic subjects.
My career then took a very different path with 7 years in the Royal Air Force as an Air Traffic Control Assistant, followed by a few years with British Airways atHeathrowAirportin Passenger Handling. I then took a short break to start a family and bring up my two lovely sons, but I soon picked up a career again by starting work at a localFlyingSchoolon a part-time basis. This then grew into a position as Administration Manager for a new company launched to sell National Gift Vouchers for Experiences, but sadly my husband’s RAF career meant we then got moved away from the area. In all this time I hardly picked up a pencil or a paint brush, although photography remained a keen interest and I relished any opportunity to use my creative flair at work.
Many years later, whilst working as a PA to a Chief Executive of a large Estate Agency chain, I felt I needed more reward and satisfaction from my working life and I realised it was time to make big changes. I gave up my career and returned to full time education to study Art & Design, on the same week as my 40th Birthday! What a milestone this was and the beginning of a long creative journey for me. Painting and drawing again, and re-visiting art in its wider sense, was a real personal and emotional discovery, only to be compared with being awakened from a very long sleep!
During the past 10 years much of my collection of work has been dominated by my modern portraiture, and more recently my series of Trees, which have proved to be a real commercial success. These bold, graphic & colourful paintings have been very popular amongst private & corporate collectors across theUK, Europe,USAand theFar East. However, I like to challenge myself from time to time with more diverse pieces for me and I have recently created some paintings of birds which I think may well be a subject for the future.
Although the graphic style of my Portraits and Trees appears to be representative of much of my work, at my Studio at home in Buckinghamshire where I now work full-time, I am surrounded by paintings in a diverse range of styles and subjects and I enjoy abstract work and photography too and there are just not enough hours in the day to do all that I want to do! I love colour, bold, strong colour and I like to create impact with many of my pieces. I hope that my paintings will give something of me to others and in return allow them to at least smile or bring them pleasure even if is in just a small way. Of course the ultimate compliment to me is, and always will be, when someone chooses to buy a piece of my work.
