Richard Ballantyne

I originally trained as an interior designer and worked for Sam Smiths brewery in Tadcaster destroying pubs in the north of England prior to retraining as a teacher and trying to do the same in schools, first in Yorkshire then in Northamptonshire. I left full time teaching in 2003 and since then have been trying to make a living as a full time ceramic artist whilst doing a little teaching at Bucks New University.

In my first teaching job I was put in charge of the ceramics studio and knowing nothing I started at evening class to keep one step ahead of the children. So started a love affair with the material.

My work is in a permanent state of flux and varies from high fired reduction porcelain to raku and figurative paper clay- it all depends on the day of the week!
